Can Saline Nasal Spray Help You Run Faster?

I’ll bet that when you saw this headline that you thought it was a joke and that I was just making it up! Well it is a little bit “tongue in cheek” but I actually did mean what I said. Saline nasal spray can help you run faster!

A while ago I became interested in what is called “Chi Running”. I became so interested in it that I actually went through the process of becoming a certified instructor. What we discover is that when you change the balance of the person and you change how they use their energy while they run, you can effect a change in how fast they run– and more importantly— whether they are likely to get an injury.

You might be surprised to hear that over 50% of people that run regularly will end up with some type of running injury. In Chi Running we try to help people avoid those injuries. Here’s a surprise— did you know that how you breath while you’re running can affect whether you get injured?

Here’s the connection. When you are running and you breath (gasp) through your mouth two things happen– you run faster than your body is ready to run — and if you run that fast you are therefore more likely to get an injury. The second thing that happens is that your heart beats quite a bit faster than if you are breathing through your nose! Think about that– your heart beats slower if you breath through your nose when you run.

So what’s the secret connection? Where is the magic “decoder ring”? Here it is: Nasal saline solution will help the nose be a lot more open especially if you use it all the time, It does this by helping to irrigate out of the nose “junk” that you could be reacting to. Well lots of people have allergies and lots of people react to the junk that’s in the air which can make it much more difficult to breath through your nose. So even if you wanted to breath through your nose, you might not be able to without a little help. We want to show you 2 things here: 1) the tremendous connection between health in the sinuses and nasal saline solution, 2) how easy it is to use a good nasal saline solution on a regular basis in your nose.

So there you have it– there’s the connection between saline nasal solution and running faster (running without injury). The saline nasal solution and spray makes it easier for you to breath through your nose. If you breath through your nose you are much more likely to run at the pace that your fitness level is ready to do. So clearly if you can use a simple strategy to keep your nose fully open while your run, you can really have less injury because your’re running at your best pace.

Nutrition and Good Nasal Health

I am writing this article to help you understand some of the different aspects of having a healthy nose. In many cases I suggest using a good nasal saline spray or solution as a key to having a healthy nose. At the same time as you are working on having a healthy nose you will also be creating the environment to have a healthy sinus. It is obvious that the nose is part of the body though we often act like it isn’t. We’re very much aware that it’s there when it doesn’t work.

The health of the nose is affected by many other things outside of the nose. I have found that nutrition is a major issue in having a healthy nose. The cells of your body are all affected by the nutrition to the body. It stands to reason that the cells of the nose are also affected by the nutrition to the body. So while I think using a nasal saline spray is important for nasal health, you can’t ignore these other issues.

So we agree then that the cells in your nose are affected by the nutrition in the body. It is surprising how many people with chronic nasal problems or chronic sinus problems do not think about this connection. They eat junky food that has the nutrition of garbage but don’t see the connection with their nasal problems.

There are a lot of nutrients that can be supplemented in addition to taking the time to eat better. By saying the word “supplement” I imply that the nutrient ought to be in the diet to start with. Unfortunately for many people who do supplement their diet with vitamins and other nutrients, there is often not much of these good nutrients present in the diet to start with. This is a recipe for failure. So even if you are using a good nasal saline solution on your nose every day you are undermining

There are over 50 key nutrients that are useful and helpful to supplement and all of them directly or indirectly play a roll in the immune function of the body. If any one of them are low, there is a bad effect on the body’s immune function. We are beginning to understand this more and so we have a lot of information on a few nutrients and a lot of research available to support the supplementation of a few nutrients. But it is likely that all of the nutrients that are crucial to health can be useful to the body when supplemented.

So as a summary, there are many different things that affect the health of the nasal passages and the sinuses. Even though one is more likely to think about nasal saline solution when you’re having symptoms, I believe the most important of these various aspects of having a healthy nose is nutrition. So get your nutrition right if you want to have a healthy nose.

Nasal Saline Solution More Effective Than Spray

This article is a review of a recent research article that looked at whether it made any difference in spraying the nose versus irrigating the nose with a nasal saline solution. The condition that was being studied was chronic sinusitis.

Chronic sinusitis is a condition where a low grade infection is going on in the sinuses. The symptoms can be pretty severe or they can be so mild that the person just thinks they have allergies. The infection may go on for weeks or months or even years.

Just to explain a little, there is a reason that the researchers were looking at whether it made a difference to add nasal irrigation to the treatment of the chronic sinus infection. The reason is that the infection will not be able to get better if the secretions blocking the sinus are not removed. The idea being studied was whether saline irrigation helped to move these secretions.

The big question the researches were looking at was whether or not it actually made a difference in using a nasal saline solution in the nose, and, if it did make a difference, whether it was important that it be a saline solution that irrigated into the the nose or whether it would work just to spray the solution into the nose.

The researchers found two different but related things. Not surprisingly they found that the nasal saline solution was helpful in treating the symptoms of a chronic sinus infection. Based on what we know about what is happening with a sinus infection this is not unexpected. What they also found, however, was that it did make a difference whether you used the nasal saline solution as an irrigation rather than as a spray—even if it is the exact same ingredient.

So to recap. It does make a difference if you use a nasal saline solution to irrigate your nose if you have a chronic sinus infection. It not only helps to use this kind of nasal solution, it actually helps to use the solution as an irrigation tool compared to just using the spray. So if you have this condition, you likely have a real benefit in using the nasal saline solution as an irrigation.N
