Your hands need to be placed behind your head, then you need to lift up your head and neck, just as though you were going to do a sit-up, but at the same time you should lift both legs slowly upwards, until they are about one foot off of the floor. Hold this for a few seconds and then slowly lower your legs back to the floor. Repeat this a few times and you should really notice your abdominal muscles are having to work hard!

Ways To Lower Cholesterol

It’s an established medical fact that high levels of cholesterol are likely to lead to heart disease and an early grave, so whatever you can do to keep your cholesterol levels within acceptable limits is unquestionably a good idea. Where lowering cholesterol is concerned then, there are 2 courses of action that are proven to work: alter the way you live and take cholesterol lowering drugs.

Hypercholesterolemia (as high cholesterol is technically called) is a fairly common complaint in Western society but has in fact only come about relatively recently, due in large part to features of the typical modern lifestyle. For most people whose cholesterol levels are abnormally raised, quite modest changes to their diet and exercise patterns are all that is required to bring their levels back within acceptable limits.

Some people are found to either have cholesterol levels so high that lifestyle modifications alone would not be sufficient, or they carry a genetic fault (familial hypercholesterolemia) that would similarly limit the benefit of improved diet and exercise. Such people are generally offered cholesterol lowering drugs called statins which come in a range of strengths and which they can expect to keep taking for as long as they live.

Before we move on to examine these two strategies, it’s worth understanding that when health professionals talk about cholesterol as it affects people, they are generally concerned with two specific types (there are more, but this simplification is reasonably accurate). These are LDL which is often called “bad cholesterol” and HDL which has been labelled “good cholesterol”.

LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) is composed in the main of lipids (body fats) and is produced by your liver as part of the overall digestion of what you eat. From the liver it is sent through the entire blood stream to supply energy to every tissue in your body. So LDL is crucial in fuelling your body, but unfortunately unused energy (excess LDL) tends to build up as fatty deposits in veins and arteries, storing up problems for the future.

HDL (High Density Lipoprotein i.e. more protein than lipid) soaks up as much as excess LDL as it can and returns it to the liver for recycling or waste. Your body however contains a much greater proportion of LDL than HDL so it’s an unequal struggle, but it has been found that increasing exercise results in an increase of HDL concentrations in the blood.

The lifestyle modifications that are recommended to lower cholesterol derive from accumulated medical evidence that being overweight, drinking too much, smoking, eating specific types of food and not taking enough exercise all contribute to high levels of LDL cholesterol and that conversely, not indulging in these practices will have the opposite effect and decrease cholesterol levels.

So what types of foods are best avoided? The simple answer is anything that contains saturated fat; so hard cheese, butter, red meat, pastries, cakes and biscuits. Conversely you should aim to increase your intake of fruit, vegetables, oat and beans as these foods actively help to lower cholesterol. Switching from butter to a plant sterol based spread (commonly marketed as “cholesterol lowering” spreads) gets the best of both worlds.

If lifestyle modifications alone aren’t able to lower your cholesterol below medically approved limits then you should seek the advice of your doctor who will most likely prescribe one of a group of drugs called statins. These pills are not in any way an alternative to adopting a healthier lifestyle; they are a supplement.

The most commonly prescribed statins are (in ascending order of strength and using both clinical and brand names):

pravastatin (Lipostat); simvastatin (Zocor); atorvastatin (Lipitor); rosuvastatin (Crestor).

The vast majority of people tolerate statins easily and suffer no side-effects at all, but it should be noted that they can damage both muscles and the liver, especially when taken in high doses and for this reason you may find that reasonably regular blood tests become a feature of your life due to the need to both monitor the effect of statins on your cholesterol levels and to watch for symptoms of internal damage.

So there you have it. Two effective and medically proven ways to lower cholesterol. The difference between the two is simply a matter of degree – taking prescribed drugs is an additional measure on top of addressing your lifestyle, which in most cases lies at the root of the problem.

How To Eat A Healthy Diet

There are really only a few rules when it comes to a happy diet. Not eating foods high is sugar and salt is a big one. Not eating processed foods is another. We all know these rules but many of us just have a difficult time following them. If you eat well, though, you can maintain a healthy weight and also become much more healthy. A healthy diet is very important.

Eating correctly means taking in the right amount of calories. Normally we need about two thousand calories a day to stay healthy. It can depend on each person, though. Everyone is a little bit different. Age, sex, weight, activity and height make a difference in the amount of calories that you will need.

Eating well means that you also eat a variety of foods. You need to eat good foods that you normally don’t eat. Eat more vegetables, fruits and whole grains. The portions need be moderate, also. This is especially true with high calorie food.

Portion control is also important. It is difficult to do- most restaurants give at least twice as much food as we should have on their plates. If you do go out a lot try splitting your meal or you can even try and order from the appetizer menu.

Your next trip to the grocery store should be a lot healthier. Buy a lot more legumes, grains, fruits and vegetables. These food are high in vitamins, minerals, fiber and complex carbohydrates. Water is important, too. Most people are dehydrated and don’t even know it. Our body is mostly water so it is essential that we get enough. A healthy diet is nothing without a good amount of water.

Don’t eat that much food with sugar and salt. Processed foods are also not good. Limit how much you take in your body. Did you know that in one year if you just drink on can of soda you can gain sixteen pounds? It’s true- it is one thing that we don’t think much about but soda can really defeat our whole diet if we don’t be careful.

Remember that when eating a healthy diet that you need to enjoy life, too. Eating foods that are not good for you won’t kill you if you eat them in moderation. Also, the more you exercise the healthier you will be. You can actually eat more if you burn calories from exercise during the day. So exercise and eat right- have a much better future.

Can we seriously shed some pounds rapidly and not end up putting those pounds and sometimes more back on again after our speed diet. This is the key to a successful weight loss program, knowing how to keep the pounds that we have shed from returning.

The same goes for if you are not eating enough, you will get to thin. Both being overweight and underweight can have their health problems, so the amount we eat is the important part of staying the right weight for our frames.

When we exercise on a regular basis, we tend to burn more calories than normal. So this is when you may need to eat more to give your body the energy to deal with this exercise and maintain a healthy body weight.

So we do know that to lose weight and maintain a sensible weight the only real way to do this is to have a healthy lifestyle which includes the right amount of food and the right amount of exercise. This way we will never have to go on a slimming diet again.

However I guess their is no major problem in getting a help in hand with serious weight loss by using a product to aid you along the way. How Eating Fruit Can Boost Your Health

Fruit is one of the most significant providers of nutrients and minerals in our diet. However, a lot of people overlook this and persist in consuming vast quantities of protein and starch. The result of this is an increasing incidences of diseases, such as diabetes, and obesity. Many people enquire what are the benefits from eating fruit?

The benefits include:

6. The digestion of fruit leaves behind very little in the way of waste products in the body. This can subsequently reduce the wear and tear on various organs and reduce the rate of aging.

7. Eating a predominantly fruit diet will allow your body to detoxify and cleanse itself on a regular basis. Waste toxic matter from the digestion of proteins, dairy products and starches can collect in the body over many years.
