Don’t Give Up On Your New Year’s Resolutions Just Yet!

There are 3 main types of New Year’s resolutions…

There are the resolutions that are made after a few glasses of champagne in the hours before the New Year is counted in. These types of resolutions are doomed to fail. In fact, you probably can not even remember them in the morning.

The second type of resolutions are those which are made in good faith, with a clear mind, and which are thoroughly meant, but which are not appropriately planned for. These types of resolutions tend to last a few weeks, maybe even a few months, but that lack of preparation and planning soon catches up with you.

But what about the New Year’s resolutions that we actually sit down and take the time to map out and plan out? The things, or changes, we truly desire in our life. These are the ones that stick the longest, and are those which can literally last a lifetime.

The question is then, into which category do the resolutions that you made last December fall within? Another would be, how successful have you been in sticking to them?

Regardless of whether you have already broken yours, or if you are still going strong with them, the following applies to you…

A New Year’s resolution is essentially a goal, and to achieve that goal you need to perform, and in order to perform you need to think both positive and smart. Those who think positive and smart tend to use systems, and the one set out here is perfect for New Year’s resolutions…

1: Establish what exactly it is that you want to achieve. You can not do everything at once, so choose just one or two things to focus on.

2: Put a timescale on it. Set yourself a realistic timescale to do what you want to do, and have smaller milestones within that too.

3: Know what you stand to gain. Always keeping the benefits in mind is the best form of motivation.

4: Consider what you will lose. Anything worth achieving will almost always also take something from your life too, such as time, money or people.

5: Determine the obstacles in your way. Any worthwhile goal will require you to overcome obstacles, so you need to know both what they are and how you will overcome them.

6: Write yourself a plan. Having one is necessary to keep you on track.

7: Create a daily routine. Your overall plan should be broken down into daily expectations, which you can review at the start of each day..

8: Never give up. The difference between success and failure is whether you immediately pick yourself and get back on track when times are hard or you make a mistake.

No Charity Event For Motorcycle Club Members

A few weeks back I received an email from a girl Kim about a Charity Motorcycle event she was working on for Bide A Wee an Animal shelter I worked at when I was younger. As I read the info I was looking forward to attending the event only to find it was being held at Jugs and Strokers the only “Biker Bar” on Long Island that does not allow Motorcycle Club Colors. I was pissed to find out I would not be welcome at this event. I then saw the email had been sent out to many other Motorcycle Clubs on Long Island. Pissed Off, I started writing a reply to the email and sent it out to the MC’s here on Long Island. Here is what I wrote.

Hey everyone this is LJ James.

You may not know this but I worked at Bide A Wee in Wantagh for many years. I have some great memories of my time working there. As much as I love the place and think Bide A Wee to be a truly great organization, I will not take off my Colors to go inside Jugs & Strokers to attend this event.

I see this email is addressed to many different Clubs. Some of your beliefs may be different then mine and you may take your Colors off to attend this event. I would hope all of you have more respect for your Club then to do that, but these are my beliefs and may not be yours.

I think it is only fair to Kim who is working very hard for this very worthy cause that she know what your feelings are about the Jugs and Strokers policy in regards to Colors. Kim has spent a lot of time working on this event and I would hate to see her event fail because she is unaware of the Revulsion Jugs and Strokers has towards Motorcycle Clubs!!!

Not only is it an old out dated Policy that promotes the Division of Motorcycle Riders, it is also illegal according to NY State Law! I have been working hard to protect and promote Motorcycle Rights and Unity here in NY and world wide. I think it is time We started working hard to change what is wrong here on Long Island! There is an old saying, “if you want to fix the world start in your own back yard”.

This is an event that, when I heard about it I wanted to attend. Then I hear it is being held at Jugs and now I am “not allowed to attend”.

I am not a bad guy! You all out there know me. How many of your events have I covered in Magazines? How many of you have I DJed for? Not only your Club events but many of your personal family events! I’ve even preformed wedding ceremonies for a few of you and after I married you I Djed your wedding!!!

You too are also all good people. Your MCs have done many things to make Long Island a better place. You have fed the Hungry, Clothed the poor, and made sure every Child on Long Island had a Toy for the Holidays. Our patches stand for what is great about America! Why should we be made to feel that wearing our Colors is even the slightest bit wrong?

If you ask Jugs and Strokers, they might try to use the excuse “well its not your group its other groups who are the bad guys”. That is a cop out, a lie, and an attempt to divide the Long Island Motorcycle Club world!!!

Over the past few years here on Long Island we have seen a Unity in the Motorcycle Club World that many still can not believe. Sport Bike Clubs and Cruiser Clubs riding and hanging together. AMA Clubs and 1% Clubs attend each others events. Law Enforcement Clubs and Outlaw Clubs Breaking Bread and Drinking together at events. I have seen every type of rider hanging out together. This is the Biker dream people!!!

There was a time when we were all told that you could not have a bar on Long Island where all MCs where aloud to mingle together. That there would be nothing but fights and problems. Then JDs Place opened and shortly after that, the Myth was put to rest.

The Motorcycle World here on Long Island has become something We are all very proud of. I call out to all of you MCs, independents, and MROs like ABATE, it is time to end the humiliating practice that Jugs and Strokers has been aloud to inflict upon the Long Island Motorcycle World for far too long!!!

I am tired of this bar being allowed to claim it is a biker bar for bikers, but if your a member of a Motorcycle Club and wear your Colors, you are some how an undesirable, and unwelcome. I say time is up, Jugs and Stokers! You have made enough money off the Long Island Motorcycle world! You need to stop being part of the Problem and become part of the Solution!!!

I’m interested to know what the feelings are of the rest of you!!!

(Because of this reply, Shortly after I wrote this the event was switched to another Long Island Biker Bar “Sick Moon Saloon” That welcomes all who Ride)

Discrimination On The Basis Of Clothing Or Club Membership Is ILLEGAL Article I, Section 11 of the New York State Constitution states “that no person shall be denied the equal protection of the laws of this state or any subdivision thereof.” Article 4, Section 40 of the Civil Rights Law provides that “all persons within the jurisdiction of this state shall be entitled to the full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities and privileges of any places of public accommodations, resort or amusement subject only to the conditions and limitations established by law and applicable alike to all persons.” The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that individuals have the constitutional right under the First Amendment to wear clothing which displays writing or designs. Cohen v. California, 403 US 15 (1971). In addition, the right of an individual to freedom of association has long been recognized and protected by the United States Supreme Court. Thus, a person’s right to wear the clothing of his choice, as well as his right to belong to any club or organization his choice is constitutionally protected, and persons or establishments who discriminate on the basis of clothing or club membership are subject to a lawsuit.

5 Tips To Easy Goal Setting

For many people goal setting is one of the toughest things to do. It’s not because we do not have desires or dreams. Often the problem is lack of know how. People do not like to fail so setting certain attainable goals is something they will just not do. Find out how to reach your desires with some easy tips. It is not as tough as it may seem or people make it.

1. Write your goals down. It seems a lot of us will try to just remember what we need to get done and that is great. The truth is when you see it written down you tend to put more value on it. Carry around your written ideas and look at them often so you will never forget them. This will keep you striving to reach them.

Make things as specific as possible. Vague suggestions mean you may not get things done. By knowing exactly what you want to accomplish you can focus more on it. People’s minds tend to wander so get as specific as possible so your success will happen quicker.

Remember the quote “keep it simple stupid”. Well this same quote also applies to goals. Most people make things more complex than they really have to. Keeping things as simple as possible means success will be a lot easier to obtain. Never make things tougher then you have to. Simple always seem to work best and that goes with goals as well.

Having friends and family as a support system around you is a very good idea. Tell them what you want to get done. They can help push you and encourage you. In the beginning this might not seem like a lot, but it will help you out. Sometimes people need a little extra push.

Sensible goals should always be considered. Most people do not think about this part. It is important not to go overboard on your desires or dreams. Know what you’re capable of, and write it down. Be sensible and success will be easier.

A lot of times people get lost when you talk about goal setting. They are confused on what they are supposed to do. The key is always taking your time and never rush into any decision. Think things through slowly and carefully before setting any goal. This will help you see greater success and at a much quicker rate. No matter what happens, whether success or failure, goals will always be a part of our everyday lives.

7 Days To A Better You

Every year we get to hear, read or watch news about “another” celebrity couple who had just called it quits in their marriage. Divorce is fast becoming an official fad in the Hollywood community. I don’t really care about these couple but it is just strange how we look up to these people and realize that they aren’t living a fairytale after all. I guess we have to bring an end to a candy-coated perception and experience raw reality.

There are varied ways to bust the bubble of your self-esteem. However, you have to keep in mind that you should not allow your sense of self to dissolve, you have to preserve this aspect of you.

Wondering what it really takes to be considered a cut above the rest? These are some techniques to help you improve yourself within 7 days.

1. Know your purpose This can be your one liner. Your life’s tag line. Your purpose will be your beginning, means and end. It is the guiding star on your journey through self-improvement.

This may seem tricky at first when you see yourself to be in a tight or even dead end. But there’s always that little loophole to turn things around and you can make a big difference to yourself.

2. Know your values What do you value most? Make a list of your top 5 values. Some examples are security, freedom, family, spiritual development, learning. As you set your goals for 2005 – check your goals against your values. If the goal doesn’t align with any of your top five values – you may want to reconsider it or revise it.

The number shouldn’t discourage you, instead it should motivate you to do more than you can ever dreamed of.

3. Know your needs Your little hang-ups can be a hindrance for this journey. Thus, you have to attend to you needs and have them met. List your top 4 needs. It might be your need to be in control, be loved or be acknowledge, whatever that may be, deal with it immediately.

4. Know your passions You know who you are and what you truly enjoy in life. Obstacles like doubt and lack of enthusiasm will only hinder you, but will not derail your chance to become the person you ought to be. Express yourself and honor the people who has inspired you to become the very person you wanted to be.

5. Live from the inside out Increase your awareness of your inner wisdom by regularly reflecting in silence. Commune with nature. Breathe deeply to quiet your distracted mind. For most of us city slickers it’s hard to even find the peace and quiet we want even in our own home. In my case I often just sit in a dimly lit room and play some classical music. There’s sound, yes, but music does soothe the savage beast.

6. Honor your strengths List 3 of your positive traits and another 3 for the special talents you have. Don’t be shy. Your strong points need acknowledgment. If you are having a difficulties, it’s time to seek the help from people who are close to you. By doing this, you’ll be surprised on what you can actually do.

7. Serve others This would be the application of the first 6 steps you have gone through. This is the moment where you transform those abstract thoughts to something concrete. This is actualizing your plans, making you true to who you are and living your ultimate purpose. You’ll be receiving priceless rewards from helping other people, most of all from a stranger who will be happy for what you have done for them.

The journey of self-improvements is not an easy task but very much worth working for. Don’t limit your experience within the four corners of your house or office. Try to reach out to other people who also needs your hand. The difference you’ve made depends on the improvements you made.

School Success Tips for the New School Year

Whether you are sending your child off to preschool, middle school, high school or college, a new school year has begun. While some children love school and anticipate the first day with excitement, others groan when they think about school. For me, I looked forward to starting school, and especially loved the day I went shopping for new clothes and school supplies with my mom.

Education is an important value in our home. For my boys, I model and teach good success habits so they can be successful in school. With these ideas, your children can be well on their way to experiencing a successful school year.

Establish Solid Morning, After School and Bedtime Routines

I first learned about the importance of solid routines when I was raising my oldest son Kai. In the third grade, Kai was diagnosed with ADHD. Keeping my son focused enough to get ready for school and do his homework required consistency and structure. I made up sheets of paper that listed every step he should take in the morning, after school, and before bed. When setting up routines, be specific and follow the same routine all the time. Routines establish good habits in children and adults.

Give Your Children Lessons in Goal Setting

The sooner we teach our children to set goals, the better. While they are young (under age 12), encourage your children to set one academic goal and one behavioral goal each year. For instance, I will refrain from hitting my sister when I get angry. Academic goals can include completing homework on time, setting up a consistent reading program, or increasing a grade in a particular subject. As children reach middle school age, they can begin to learn how to set bigger goals or set a larger number of goals each year. To remind your children what their goals are, get creative and make a colorful goals sheet or vision board.

Communicate Often with Your Children and Teachers

Parents that are involved with their child’s education by keeping the lines of communication open help their child be more successful. Talk to the teachers regularly and make sure you are available to talk with your child. When a child is struggling in school, working together with the teachers can help you be a team in shaping your child’s character in and out of school. While some children start talking the moment they walk in the door, others internalize what is going on at school. Ask open ended questions that encourage your child to talk, and listen without judgment to what is on their heart and mind. Bedtime and playtime are great times to get children to open up.

Stay Tuned In to Your Childs Interests and Talents

Have your ever noticed how some kids have natural talent for singing, some children are gifted academically, and others have a special knack for taking apart and putting things back together? That’s what is so great about children. Each child is unique and special. With all the competition and comparisons in school today, it can be easy for a child to get discouraged and feel bad about himself. Instead, help your child recognize what her strengths are by paying attention to what gives her energy, and what activities she naturally gravitates towards. Encourage your child to embrace his natural interests and talents instead of trying to be like someone else.

Help Your Child Minimize Stress

There are so many things that can cause stress for children today. Whether its the pressure of difficult or excessive schoolwork, bullies at school, or intense competition in extracurricular activities, stress will affect the entire family. Pay attention to what might be causing stress for your child. Eliminate the stressor or teach your children effective stress management techniques. Learning how to plan better can help minimize some homework stress. Minimizing extracurricular activities keeps a family balanced. Teaching your children how to control their mind by thinking flexible thoughts, and keeping fears and anxieties under control can go a long way towards alleviating stress. Educate your child about the importance of healthy eating, exercise and proper sleep. But most important, take care of yourself so you can model peaceful family living.

Success in school is a building block to success later in life. Using these tips will help you and your child create and celebrate a successful school year.

Self Improvement: It’s Your Choice

These days, the word self-improvement has become undeniably popular and we are continuously bombarded with books, videos and even TV shows about these subjects. But truth be told, is there really any sense to it? Should you waste the money to buy the books and videos that would supposedly help you improve not just yourself but your life as well? The answer would vary from one person to the next simply because you have to believe in it for it to actually have an effect on your life.

All the various sources of information can provide incredible value if you actually use them as intended. It takes a dedicated person to actually put into practice what the books teach. This is because understanding requires the desire to actually learn and without it, the books would be quite useless. Everybody can seek knowledge and attend various workshops but without the want to actually take away something from it, the efforts are futile.

The books would offer people a more systematic approach to achieving self improvement and a good one would help the person look within themselves to achieve that. Fact is – there are things in life that people tend to forget because of all the other things one has to do. Work eats up much of our time and most people barely have enough time to enjoy other things. This is probably the worst offense when it comes to self improvement.

Living a balanced life in terms of work and play is important. Too much of one or the other and life tends to become routine and mundane. There would be no excitement and that life would be empty. So setting a goal for yourself would help a lot when it comes to breaking that routine and changing the path you’re currently walking on. After all, life is all about changes.

Books can provide you with the inspiration and motivation to push forward with your goals. They inspire you to dream for something better and give you the strength and encouragement you need to achieve it. Think of them as silent cheerleaders that help you push through when times get a little tougher than usual.

Whatever it takes to motivate you to improve yourself in some manner such as a book that scares you into action. They would make you imagine that life you could be leading in 10 years if you don?t make the changes. Sometimes, they also help in recovering lost dreams that one may have forgotten because of all the other things in life that’s been taking up one’s time.

We can have any life we choose. There’s no one holding us back but ourselves! People have become so used to their way of life that they have ignores all the signs that say, “Wrong Way”. These books could help one see that and help create a road map that would take one to where he or she wants to be.

Lastly, self improvement is not a one time thing. You can’t do it once and then stop. Change is constant and we must continuously change in order to better ourselves. When one is complacent, we tend to become unproductive. Through self improvement, we can all learn to look within ourselves and find the motivation we need to move forward and be something more.
